Unlike most teas that are steeped and then strained, matcha stands in a category of its own. Instead of brewing the leaves, matcha is whisked into hot water - meaning you’re consuming the entire tea leaf in its finely ground form. This unique preparation not only gives matcha its signature creamy texture and vibrant green color but also enhances its natural benefits. Because you’re consuming the whole leaf, matcha delivers a concentrated boost of antioxidants, amino acids, and caffeine - offering clean, sustained energy without the crash of coffee. Preparing matcha is as much an experience as it is a drink - and with a few simple steps, you can bring this centuries-old tradition into your own daily ritual.
Choosing Your Matcha
Before you start whisking, it’s important to choose the right matcha for your needs. Not all matcha is created equal - quality can vary greatly depending on how it’s grown and processed.
Our Premium Organic Ceremonial Matcha represents the highest level of craftsmanship - a true luxury experience. Made from the youngest, shade-grown tencha leaves and finely stone-ground into an ultra-smooth powder, it offers a naturally sweet, delicate flavor and vibrant green hue that’s best enjoyed on its own.
For your everyday ritual, our other ceremonial matcha varieties are still excellent choices - smooth, vibrant, and full of flavor - perfect for daily sipping or whisking into a creamy matcha latte. Whether you’re indulging in our premium matcha or enjoying one of our classic ceremonial blends, you’ll taste the care and quality that make matcha such a special part of tea culture.

Farm to Cup Direct Sourcing

Tools You'll Need to Make Matcha
Traditional matcha preparation uses a few simple tools that help you achieve the smooth, frothy texture and authentic experience that make matcha so special. While you can make matcha with modern alternatives, having the right tools makes a noticeable difference in flavor and presentation.
1. Chawan (Matcha Bowl)
A wide, shallow bowl that gives you plenty of space to whisk your matcha evenly and create that signature foam on top.
2. Chasen (Bamboo Whisk)
This handcrafted whisk is made from a single piece of bamboo, with fine prongs that help aerate the matcha for a creamy, frothy finish. While you can also prepare matcha without a traditional whisk - using a handheld frother, blender, or even shaking it in a jar - a bamboo whisk will give you the smoothest, most authentic results.
3. Chashaku (Bamboo Scoop)
A small, curved scoop used to measure the perfect amount of matcha powder. One scoop of matcha weights a little under one gram on average.
4. Fine Mesh Sifter
Sifting your matcha before adding water prevents clumps and ensures a silky-smooth texture.
5. Whisk Stand & Spoon Holder
These keep your tools in good shape long-term and make it easy to store them neatly between uses.
6. Electric Kettle or Temperature-Controlled Water Heater
Matcha should be whisked with water heated to about 175°F - just below boiling - to preserve its delicate flavor and nutrients. Using hotter water can make the tea taste bitter.
If you’re just starting out, you don’t need to worry about tracking down every single tool individually. Our Ceremonial Matcha Set includes most of what you need - a matcha bowl, bamboo whisk, whisk stand, bamboo spoon, spoon holder, and sifter - making it easy to enjoy the full matcha experience at home. With this kit, you’ll have everything ready to start whisking and savoring your matcha in no time.
How to Prepare Matcha
Making matcha might look a little different than your usual cup of tea, but once you get the hang of it, the process becomes a calming and rewarding ritual. Here’s how to make the perfect bowl (or cup) of matcha at home:
1. Warm the bowl and whisk
Place your matcha whisk (bristle side down) in your matcha bowl. Fill the bowl with hot water and let it sit for about 5 minutes. This softens the whisk bristles and warms the bowl.
2. Prepare the tools
Discard the water. Gently shake off any excess moisture from the whisk, then place it on the whisk stand. Dry the inside of the bowl with a clean towel.
3. Sift the matcha
Rest your sifter over the bowl. Using a matcha spoon (chashaku), measure 1 heaping scoop of matcha powder (1 g) into the sifter. Gently sift the powder into the bowl to remove clumps.
4. Add water
Pour in about 3 oz of water heated to 175°F (80°C). Do not use boiling water as this will cause the matcha to taste bitter.
5. Whisk
Using your matcha whisk, whisk briskly in a “W” or “M” motion until the tea becomes frothy with fine bubbles and no visible lumps.
6. Serve
Enjoy straight from the bowl, or pour into a cup.
Other Ways to Prepare Matcha
There are many ways to prepare matcha, both hot, cold, as a latte or in a smoothie. You can also add it to baked goods for color and flavor.
Traditionally, Matcha is whisked in hot water and drunk straight. Modern tea culture has moved towards matcha lattes as the preferred method. If you are new to matcha, lattes are the best choice to start.
