This page provides information regarding California Proposition 65 as it relates to our products. This notice is applied broadly across our offerings, including tea and teaware as part of our compliance with California law.

We want to explain why this notice appears and what it does and does not mean.

What is Proposition 65?

California’s Proposition 65 (officially the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) requires businesses to provide a warning if a product could expose consumers to substances identified by the State of California at levels above very conservative thresholds.

The presence of a Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe, nor does it indicate that any food safety or product safety standards have been violated.

Why does this apply to tea?

Tea and herbal ingredients are agricultural products. They are plants grown in soil and influenced by natural environmental conditions. Because of this, their composition can vary naturally from harvest to harvest.

Even with careful sourcing, responsible farming practices, and proper handling, some characteristics of plant-based ingredients are not fully controllable. This natural variability exists regardless of whether ingredients are conventionally grown or certified organic.

California’s Proposition 65 requirements apply to potential exposure levels, including those that may arise from naturally occurring components of agricultural products. These thresholds are often significantly lower than those used by federal food safety agencies.

As a result, many everyday foods, including teas, coffees, spices, fruits, and vegetables, are commonly sold with Proposition 65 warnings in California.

Why does this apply to teaware?

Proposition 65 also applies to non-food items, including ceramics, glassware, and other household goods. Because teaware materials, manufacturing processes, and regulatory interpretations can vary, many retailers choose to apply Proposition 65 notices broadly to ensure compliance.

Including the notice does not indicate that a specific product is unsafe or defective. It reflects California’s disclosure requirements.

Do we add Proposition 65–listed substances to our products?

No.

We do not knowingly add any substances covered by Proposition 65 to our teas, nor do we design or select products with the intent of introducing regulated substances. Our ingredients and products are chosen for quality and safety, and our handling facility operates in compliance with applicable food safety regulations.

Why include the warning across all products?

Proposition 65 is a disclosure law, not a product safety ranking. Because of its broad scope and conservative thresholds, businesses often apply warnings across their product catalog to ensure consistency, transparency, and legal compliance.

Providing this notice allows us to meet California’s requirements while continuing to offer natural, thoughtfully sourced products.

What should customers understand?

  • A Proposition 65 warning is a regulatory disclosure, not a safety determination

  • It does not mean substances were intentionally added

  • It does not mean our products are unsafe to use or consume

  • Similar warnings appear on a wide range of everyday food and household items sold in California

If you have questions about our sourcing, handling practices, or quality standards, we are always happy to help. Transparency and trust are important to us, and we appreciate the opportunity to explain.
