Description

This classic Japanese green tea features bits of toasted rice. When Genmaicha tea is made, the rice kernels pop like popcorn during the firing process. This has earned the tea the fitting nickname 'popcorn tea'. The sweet and toasty flavor profile is perfect for festive days and pairs well with savory meals. Certified USDA Organic.

This organic green tea with toasted rice offers a unique, nutty flavor that customers describe as "comforting" and "complex." Most praised its "mellow" taste and "roasted rice" notes, calling it a "nice change of pace." However, some found it bitter and overly vegetal, even with adjusted brewing. Leaf size may be smaller than other brands.

A solid choice for a change of pace

I am not a tea sommelier with eloquent descriptions of undertones and subtle finishes so I’ll keep this simple. Genmaicha is a unique tea that is not overpowering but also not weak. The toasted rice gives it a different but very pleasant flavor and is a nice change of pace from a regular green tea. It is a good choice for a little diversity in your regular rotation.

bitter and unpleasant

This Genmaicha has a very bitter and unpleasant taste. Not a high quality tea.

Genmaicha

This tea was not for me at all. I have tried several Genmaicha blends from various brands, and this was the only one that tasted overly vegetal and bitter to me. Every sip had a bitter aftertaste, even though I brewed it cooler than instructed by 5 degrees, and stayed within the steeping time recommended range.
I tried it both when it was hot and as it cooled near room temperature to see if I would like it then, but it had a bitter taste to every one of my sips.
I got a sample to try because I was looking forward to the toasty-grain flavor that rice has in these blends. I don’t care for most green teas, so I thought this would be a way to dramatically change so flavor notes to my liking. This one had an almost seaweed-like umami flavor moreso than the roasted/toasted flavor of the rice. If you like strong vegetal green teas, maybe this will be for you.

It’s not for me at all. Tastes almost like plain green teas I’ve had before (bitter and vegetal), even though this was whole leaf and organic and had the toasted rice ingredient.

The quality seems good and the customer service and shipping are always good from this company. This was the only tea I’ve disliked so strongly, but I like or love the others I’ve tried. If you’re nervous about green tea taste like me, try their Medicine Ball blend instead: the green tea taste is smooth and subtle, with no astringency or bitterness.

Comforting Morning Tea

Looking out my window this morning, inhaling the complex scent of genmaicha was so comforting. It's the best of green tea with two different scents of rice as well. It's one of the few teas I can drink before I have breakfast, as I have a sensitive stomach. A moment of calm before I start my day. Tastes green and rich.

Such a fun tea!

Love the roasted rice! A very nice addition to a green tea. My husband loves this tea for his mid-morning time out in the garden. We always have this tea on hand for those special moments, because this tea is quite special. The roasted flavor combined with the green tea is a winning combination.

This is my all time favorite green tea. The toasted rice gives it a richer and more complicated flavor.

Smooth & almost nutty

I bought this for my husband as a change in his normal routine. I suprised him with a cup to which he said what a wonderful nutty flavor which goes well with the tea choice.
I then added it to a brew of the rice pudding and he could not stop raving about the flavor mash up .

Unique nutty flavor

I had never heard of this tea and ordered the sample to try it. What a unique toasty/nutty flavor, It is mild and I added just a small amount of stevia and it really brought out the toasted rice flavor!
