When it comes to weight loss and weight management, it seems like there is always a new diet, exercise program or fitness fad that pops up as a way to revolutionize your health and meet your weight goals. While much of this is noise, what has been known for quite some time that certain teas have the ability to assist in your weight loss and weight management. With new studies being published on a regular basis showing that tea can help in this regard, there is a lot of buzz surrounding the topic and quite a bit of research that seems to back it up. All Traditional Teas – Help boost metabolism
All traditional teas can assist with weight loss due to their caffeine content. Caffeine slightly increases your resting metabolism, resulting in more calories burned over time. In terms of caffeine, Black teas tend to have the most per cup, somewhere in the neighborhood of 45mg, while green teas will have the least, around 25mg.
White, Green, and Oolong Teas – Enhance exercise
These teas have high concentrations of the antioxidant compound EGCG, or epigallocatechin-3-galloate. EGCG helps the body burn more fat as energy, particularly during exercise. Concentrations of this compound in the teas listed above are in descending order, with White Teas having the most, with Oolongs having the least.
Pu-Erh Teas – Assist with fat storage after meals
Pu-Erh teas have been shown to help regulate the hormones that control how much fat is used for energy and how much fat is stored by the body. More specifically, Pu-Erhs help enhance the amount of fat used for energy and inhibit the amount of fat is stored in fat cells throughout the body. These types of tea are particularly effective during or slightly after meals.
Herbal teas – Can help with digestion, sleep and blood sugar
There are a number of herbal teas that can help with weight loss. Ginger and Lemon for example help with digestion and balances your bodies acidity respectively. Bilberries are known to help stabilize blood sugar and curb cravings.
Skip the sugar
Regardless, drinking tea throughout the day is a great way to boost metabolism, as long as you skip the sugar. Think of it as another tool in your toolbox, along with diet and exercise.
