Best teas for sleep

Sleep, or the lack thereof is a major problem effecting a large percentage of the population. Drinking certain types of tea is a great way to wind down for the evening and help set the stage for a productive rest period. Because caffeine is a stimulant, you should avoid regular tea before bed.

Decaf Green or Black tea for Sleep

Because over 99% of the caffeine is removed from these teas, they are usually OK to drink prior to sleep. The decaffeination process does retain l-theanine in the tea. This is the amino acid that provides the calming aspects of tea.

Recommended herbs for sleep

A number of herbs have been traditionally associated with rest, relaxation and calmness. Usually these herbs work best when combined in blends where they can work together.

Chamomile

Chamomile is known the be a mild sedative and sleep inducer. The tea works as a mild tranquilizer, relaxing the nerves and muscles. While there isn't conclusive evidence that it helps induce sleeps, because we believe it helps us sleep - makes it seem to work.

Lavender

Lavender reduces stress and anxiety. The smell of lavender also increases the time spent in deep sleep. The smell of lavender also will promote sleep.

Lemon Balm

As far back as the Middle ages, this herb has been used to reduce stress, anxiety and indigestion. It is a member of the mint family, with a minty/lemony taste. Lemon Balm may interact with the GABA receptors in your brain, the activation of which reduces stress and helps induce sleep.

Valerian Root

As a strong natural sedative, Valerian root has been used since the 2nd century to help people fall asleep faster and increase sleep quality. It also doesn't have many of the side effects of sleep medication.
