Golden Monkey is sometimes referred to by the grower (because this tea is so good) as King of Panyong Congou. After a painstakingly labor intensive production process, this tea is hand sorted to ensure a beautiful leaf appearance. The leaves are curly, wiry and well twisted with a high percentage of tips evident. ‘Tip’ is the tip of the new shoots and during the manufacturing process these tips turn a gold brown. ‘Tippy tea’ is a leading indicator of exceptional quality, highly selective grading and usually only available in the first few weeks of the new season (New season teas have the most flavor, rarest and most eagerly sought by tea connoisseurs)

Panyong Congou Teas are mainly produced in the mountainous region of Fujian County and Shounin County. The finished teas are made from a local variety of tea bush that is noted for its rich aroma, sweet taste, golden color and well-twisted tippy leaf.

In earlier times Golden Monkey was the tea of Taipans and local overlords. They claimed that the secret for this tea was that it had to be plucked by the golden monkey which centuries ago inhabited the forests of Fujian Province. This special tea was very rare and the Taipans demanded every ounce of tea because they claimed that it gave them ‘the agility and sexual prowess of the patriarch of a golden monkey troop’. Today the plucking process has changed somewhat but it is fascinating to know the tradition behind this marvelous tea.

A sweet cocoa fragrance emerges from the bag and the leaves exhibit a color spectrum of dark brown to auburn.  The liquor has the soft, rich sweetness of a bittersweet cocoa and imparts a savory lingering aftertaste. A very likeable, self standing tea, highly praised by many of our customers. There are many different qualities of Golden Monkey but only a few have the wonderful cocoa notes we admire.

The organic Golden Monkey is really nice. While East Frisian Blend is my every morning go to brew, the Golden Monkey is a close second. The nose is sweet and grassy, like a freshly mowed field of alfalfa hay, and on the palate, a creamy, frothy mouthfeel redolent of chocolate. It lacks a certain maltiness that I like in black tea, but is nevertheless a delicious tea. (Posted on 1/2/2018)

I am glad I ordered a sample of this to try before I plunged into a full price purchase. I love Earl Grey, and I don't think this will replace it. But, this is an excellent, clean tasting, true black tea. I did taste the rich chocolate tones as a pleasant aftertaste. Very sweet naturally - did not need much honey and I skipped the cream. Since 1991, i.e. since the the collapse of the USSR, good teas from India have disappeared. It is very hard to find a good quality tea in the US. However, being very sceptical about the US black tea market, I have recently made a great DISCOVERY - Chinese Golden Monkey tea. It was a true surprise, as I could not believe that China could DELIVER! I tasted a couple of dozens of Chinese teas over the last 30 years. I tasted in in non-Organic form, and I do hope that in its Organic form it would taste the same or even better. I hope not to be disappointed. (Posted on 10/7/2014)
