Jade Oolong was founded by the Taiwan Tea Research and Extension Station (TTRES). The TTRES is an organization that has been doing long term investment in artificially breeding new types of tea plants and only chooses the best tea plants for testing in their tea farm, which is known as the testing farm. The TTRES will place a notice in front of the tea plants during the testing stage; however, since many different tea plants are being tested at the same time, they give each new plant a number for simplification. Jade Oolong was number 2029 during its testing stage. The TTRES officially named Jade Oolong, Tai Cha No. 13, as it was the 13th new tea breed they have found; however, before its official name, local people called it 29, taking the last two digit of the number that was given to Jade Oolong during its testing period. The name, Jade Oolong, was named later in 1981.

Finding a new breed tea is a long term work. It took 21 years to develop Jade Oolong and Jin Xuan Oolong. The process starts first starts with selecting the tea plant and then cross breeding.

- First step: finding a young tea plant (roughly 1 year).

- Second step: finding a new best breed (roughly 6 years).

- Third step: compare with different new tea plant then choose the best one.

- Final step: growing in the tea farm for testing.

- Name the tea plant if testing is successful.

The two new breed of Oolong tea, Jade Oolong and Jin Xuan Oolong, was founded by Dr. Zhen Zhe Wu, former president of TTRES. The tea market had its peak sale because of the new breeds of tea leaves founded by Dr. Wu. He is called the “Father of the Taiwan Tea” because of the great contributions he gave to the tea market. He passed away in 1993.

Top of the line!Review by Chris B
Lots of Jade Oolongs to choose from. This one is among the best I've sampled. Doesn't require a lot of pearls, and re-steepable, so price is less of a concern. (Posted on 5/8/2016)
Even; Good Base TeaReview by Pat
It has a very even flavor, unlike blends where you have a mix of high notes and low notes. Neither sweet, nor bitter. A monotone/neutral taste. Try blending it with Pearl of Fruits or Emperor's 7 Treasures (peach). (Posted on 3/31/2015)
