Pu-erh tea has gone from being a niche to amongst the most popular teas that we sell in just a few years. We can thank national exposure through shows like Dr. Oz for putting a spot light on the unique aspects of Pu-erh that no other tea has.

Pu-erh is known for being a digestive aid, as well as good for the circulatory systems. Customers have used it to lower cholesterol and lose weight. There is some perception that only green and white teas are healthy, while other styles are “less healthy”. This is not the case, as each tea category has unique aspects, Pu-erh being one of them. The reason Pu-erh is so unique is because of its production method.

We’ll often hear the term fermentation applied to tea, but that is not really correct. The correct term is oxidation. When tea leaves are exposed to air, they oxidize just like an apple would, eventually turning brown and then black. Pu-erh tea undergoes fermentation, so while it’s allowed to oxidize fully like black tea, before it’s dried its piled into cakes into a cool, moist environment where natural microbial action begins altering the chemical nature of tea. Sourdough bread is another example of this process. This fermentation is what gives Pu-erh its unique properties. There are also raw forms of Pu-erh, which we’ll cover later this year.

This Pu-erh is a new generation of Hybrid blends that includes coffee into the mixture. It’s delicious by itself, but a spot of milk works real well with this blend. Think coffee when first trying this blend.

Not my favorite Pu-Erh but still noteworthy, and a satisfying replacement for my occasional late evening coffee cravings. Reminiscent of accidentally pouring tea in an unwashed mug earlier used for coffee - yet it still works because of the earthiness of the pu-erh, sort of. I have found that brewing at a slightly lower temperature is necessary for me to pick up any caramel notes, I wish it were slightly stronger however. Overall slightly odd but interesting. This stuff tastes like what would happen if coffee and tea had a kid. Its tea, but it tastes like coffee! Add in the chocolate taste, and this stuff is GREAT (Posted on 5/10/2016)
